www.goodinassociates.com (pardon the dated vibe... the site isn’t a priority, since we’re already well-known in our market)

Our story

In the mid 1980s, our founder Thom Goodin (a “doubly-unemployable” English and Philosophy major) was teaching himself to code on an IBM PC XT.  He learned that his small Illinois county needed a court case management system.  So he went to work for free at the court for a year and a half, listening to what they needed.  We’ve been listening ever since, adding integrated systems for document management, probation, prosecution, public defender and jury.  In 2000, we launched a website with e-government and e-pay services.  Throughout it all, we have steadfastly focused only on Illinois.  Maybe we could’ve made more money if we’d branched out, but we are perfectly content with the fierce loyalty of users in over 80 counties in our home state.

Though we now have remote staff as well, the heart of the company remains right where it started... in Carbondale, Illinois, home of the SIU Salukis, on the edge of the beautiful Shawnee National Forest.  We’re now proudly female-led, big enough to be responsive, while small enough to see, recognize and reward the efforts of the incredible people who work for us.

What we value

  • Honesty with our staff, our clients and the state agencies which regulate our clients’ operations
  • A respectful workplace based on give-and-take collaboration between clients, support staff and developers
  • A knowledgeable, self-directed, stable, well-compensated and happy workforce.  Turnover isn’t good for us, our clients or our staff.
  • People being themselves, including expression of gender, age, race, culture, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
  • Functional and efficient UI, not bells and whistles
  • Semi-flexible daytime work hours
  • Our typical 39-hour workweek
  • Our free time and what we do with it: hiking, photography, scuba, tennis, art, golf, kayaking, cooking, Jeeping, family, building stuff, singing, Monty Python, Rick and Morty.

What we don’t value

  • Bureaucracy- we don’t pigeonhole people in a multi-level org chart.  If you excel, it will be noticed.
  • Meetings
  • Cubicles and bullpens
  • Unrealistic development schedules

Employee testimonials

Let’s face it, anything we said here could be completely made up.   But our hiring process gives you the chance to talk to our staff both early on, and if we do an onsite interview.  For our part, we feel that there’s no better testimonial than having numerous employees who have been with us over 20 years.
